LC Single-mode OS2 drawers

SC Single-mode & LC Multimode drawers

Answers to the most frequent questions from fiber installers and network managers.

1How to choose between an LC and SC optical drawer ?
The choice depends on your existing cabling and active equipment:
  • LC: compact (1.25 mm), dominant standard in datacenters. 48 ports per 1U. Compatible with SFP/SFP+/SFP28 LC modules. Ideal for maximum density.
  • SC: larger (2.5 mm), 24 duplex ports = 48 fibers in 1U. Robust, common on older equipment and field FTTH networks. Compatible with SC simplex or duplex patch cords.
Simple rule: if your switches or OLT have LC ports, choose LC. If your installed cables are SC or your PON network uses SC enclosures, choose SC.
2What is the difference between UPC and APC ?
The difference is in the polishing angle of the ferrule:
  • UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): right angle, return loss >50 dB. Suited for data networks (Ethernet, dark fiber, datacenter).
  • APC (Angled Physical Contact): 8° angle, return loss >60 dB. Required on PON, GPON, xWDM networks where reflections disturb the optical signal.
Warning: a UPC adapter and an APC connector are not compatible — the connection is physically possible but losses are catastrophic (>60 dB). APC adapters are recognizable by their green color.
3Is this optical drawer compatible with my 19" rack ?
Yes. All 4 ELFCAM models comply with the EIA-310 / DIN 41494 standard for 19" racks. M6 mounting brackets are included. The drawer occupies exactly 1U (44 mm) in height. It is compatible with network cabinets from all brands: Digitus, Lanberg, Navepoint, APC, Schneider, Rittal, Eaton, Legrand, Nexans, etc.
4Are pigtails included and already spliced ?
Yes. Each drawer is delivered fully equipped and fusion pre-spliced at the factory. You don't need a splicer to install the drawer. All you need to do is:
  • Mount the drawer in your rack
  • Route your multi-fiber optical cable through the cable glands
  • Splice the cable fibers to the drawer pigtails (on site)
  • Connect your patch cords on the adapter side
Field splicing (incoming cable → drawer pigtails) remains to be done, which requires a fiber optic fusion splicer.
5What is the typical insertion loss of the adapters ?
ELFCAM adapters use a zirconia ceramic sleeve (carrier grade):
  • Typical insertion loss: ≤ 0.2 dB
  • Maximum guaranteed insertion loss: 0.3 dB
  • Lifetime: ≥ 500 cycles of mating/unmating
These values comply with IEC 61754 requirements for fiber optic connectors. For projects requiring a tight optical budget (e.g. GPON 28 dB), allow 0.3 dB per connection in your link budget.
6Does the SC/APC drawer 15858 accept SC/UPC patch cords ?
Not without reservation. The Ref 15858 drawer is equipped with SC/APC adapters (8° angle, green color). Plugging an SC/UPC patch cord (right angle) into an SC/APC adapter is mechanically possible, but return loss will degrade to ~26 dB instead of >60 dB.
For GPON/xPON networks where reflection disturbs the OLT laser, this combination should be avoided. For simple data links without return loss requirements, insertion loss remains acceptable.
Recommendation: always use the same polarity (APC+APC or UPC+UPC) across the entire link.
7Can I use this drawer outdoors or in non-climate-controlled rooms ?
The ELFCAM optical drawer is designed for indoor cabinet installation (rack in server room, technical room, network cabinet). It tolerates temperatures from -20°C to +75°C, which covers unheated technical rooms.
For outdoor installation or humid environments (IP protection required), we recommend using a weatherproof IP55+ cabinet and integrating this drawer inside. The drawer itself is not IP-certified.
8Delivery time and stock availability ?
All 4 models are in stock in France. Delivery is shipped next business day after order (order before 2 p.m.). Delivery via Colissimo or carrier depending on weight. Shipping is free above a certain order amount.
