Frequently asked questions — fibre optic patch cords

1Which patch cord for my Orange, SFR or Bouygues router?

For Orange (Livebox 4/5/6), SFR (Box 8) and Bouygues (Bbox Ultym) routers, the wall-mounted optical terminal outlet (PTO) and the router interface both use an SC/APC connector (8° green angle). Choose an SC/APC–SC/APC simplex OS2 patch cord. For a standard apartment or house, a length of 2 to 5 m is sufficient. In environments with mechanical risk (under doors, metal trunking), opt for the steel-armoured version.

2Which patch cord for my Freebox?

Freebox units (Revolution, Delta, Ultra, Player) use an SC/UPC connector (blue, flat face) on the router side and SC/APC on the wall-mounted PTO side. Choose an SC/APC–SC/UPC simplex patch cord. Be careful not to use an SC/APC–SC/APC patch cord on a Freebox: the APC/UPC mismatch generates additional insertion loss and may degrade the connection. The steel-armoured version is recommended if the patch cord must cross a traffic area.

3What is the difference between simplex and duplex?

A simplex patch cord contains a single fibre — the signal travels in only one direction, or in both directions at different wavelengths (BiDi/WDM technology, GPON standard). It is the standard for residential FTTH installations. A duplex patch cord contains two fibres side by side — one fibre per direction, simultaneous bidirectional transmission. Standard for Ethernet links on SFP+ switches in datacenters and enterprises.

4SC/APC or SC/UPC — how to tell them apart?

By the connector colour: green = SC/APC (8° angle, return loss ≥ 65 dB); blue = SC/UPC (flat face, return loss ≥ 50 dB). The residential PTO in France always uses SC/APC (green). Active equipment (converters, older routers) sometimes uses SC/UPC (blue). Plugging an SC/APC into an SC/UPC generates additional loss of 3 to 5 dB — always check compatibility before installation.

5Can an existing fibre patch cord be extended?

Yes, with an adapter coupler (junction sleeve) of the same connector type: SC/APC–SC/APC to join two SC/APC patch cords, for example. Each coupler adds about 0.5 dB of additional insertion loss. For long links requiring several joints, check that the total optical budget remains within your equipment's limits. See Elfcam couplers →.

6Which patch cord length should you choose?

Measure the actual distance between the PTO and your router following the cable path (skirting boards, mouldings, door passage), then add 10 to 15% margin. Avoid excess patch cords: a large loop of cable behind furniture can create bends below the minimum radius and increase losses. Common lengths: 1 m (PTO and router in the same room), 2–3 m (adjacent room), 5–10 m (two separate rooms).

7Are Elfcam patch cords compatible with all operators?

Yes. Elfcam patch cords comply with IEC 61755-2-1 and are sized for the French FTTH standard (SC/APC, OS2 G.657A2). They are compatible with Orange, SFR, Bouygues, Free, as well as alternative ISPs (Coriolis, Prixtel, NordNet, etc.) that use the same PTOs. Optical parameters (insertion loss ≤ 0.3 dB, return loss ≥ 65 dB APC) are batch tested at the factory. Certified CE, RoHS and REACH.

8What are the delivery times for Elfcam patch cords?

All patch cords listed on this page are available in stock in France with shipping within 24 business hours. Orders placed before 2:00 pm are dispatched the same day via Colissimo or Chronopost depending on the option selected. For FTTH projects with large quantities (patch cord lots, distribution cables), volume discounts and scheduled deliveries are available on request.
