PLC Fibre Optic Splitters — 1:2 to 1:32 Dividers for FTTH and PON Networks

Distributing a fibre signal to multiple subscribers or service points? Our PLC splitters (Planar Lightwave Circuit) divide an optical signal into 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 outputs without any electrical power supply. PLC 2.0 technology with high-purity crystal for uniform distribution (< 1 dB). SC/APC, SC/UPC and LC/APC connectors, ABS, LGX and FTTH enclosure formats.

Choosing the right PLC splitter for your installation

The choice depends on the number of outputs, the connector and the enclosure format.

1) How many outputs?

RatioLoss (dB)Typical use
1:2~3.5 dBDual service, line testing
1:4~7 dBSmall building, SMB
1:8~10.5 dBMedium building, campus
1:16~13.5 dBLarge building, dense FTTH
1:32~17 dBVery dense PON network

Tip: check your optical budget (OLT power – ONT sensitivity – cable losses) before choosing the ratio.

2) Which enclosure format?

ABS (compact)

Standard, lightweight format. Fits inside FTTH distribution enclosures.

LGX (rack)

19" cassette format. For patch panels and optical drawers in racks.

FTTH enclosure

Wall-mounted distribution enclosure with built-in splitter. Direct installation.

PLC splitters and FTTH distribution enclosures

PLC splitters — SC/APC (single-mode)

Compact ABS format and FTTH enclosure. Ratios 1:2 to 1:32, SC/APC connector — the FTTH standard.

PLC splitters — LC/APC & SC/UPC + LGX format

LC/APC connector for modern networks, SC/UPC for digital links, and LGX format for rack mounting.

PLC 2.0 technology — why choose Elfcam splitters

Advantages of PLC technology

  • High-purity crystal: premium glass for minimal insertion loss and extended lifespan.
  • Uniform distribution: every output receives the same optical power (uniformity < 1 dB). Tested unit by unit at the factory.
  • Wide bandwidth: operates across the full 1260–1650 nm range — compatible with GPON, XGS-PON, EPON.
  • PLC 2.0 vs FBT: unlike FBT (fused biconical taper), PLC offers better uniformity and supports more outputs (up to 1:64).
  • Passive: no electrical power, no maintenance, maximum reliability.

FAQ — PLC fibre optic splitters

1Which splitter ratio should I choose for my installation?
Work out your optical budget (OLT power – ONT sensitivity – cable losses) and check that the splitter loss fits within it:
  • 1:2 (~3.5 dB): testing, dual service
  • 1:4 (~7 dB): small building, SMB
  • 1:8 (~10.5 dB): medium building, campus
  • 1:16 (~13.5 dB): dense FTTH
  • 1:32 (~17 dB): very dense PON network — check the margin
2What is the difference between PLC and FBT?
PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) offers better uniformity between outputs and supports more outputs (up to 1:64). FBT (Fused Biconical Taper) is simpler and cheaper for low ratios (1:2, 1:4) but less uniform beyond 1:8. Elfcam exclusively uses PLC 2.0 technology.
3ABS, LGX or FTTH enclosure: which format?
  • ABS: standard compact format, fits inside FTTH distribution boxes or street cabinets
  • LGX: 19" cassette format for rack mounting, optical drawer or patch panel
  • FTTH enclosure: full wall-mounted enclosure with built-in splitter, ready to install
4Do splitters need a power supply?
No. PLC splitters are 100% passive components — no electrical power, no maintenance, no active point of failure. The signal is divided by the optical waveguide.
5What is uniformity and why does it matter?
Uniformity measures the power difference between the strongest and weakest output. Elfcam guarantees < 1 dB — every subscriber receives essentially the same optical power. Critical for FTTH networks where every dB counts.
6SC/APC, SC/UPC or LC/APC: which connector?
  • SC/APC: French FTTH standard (carrier network, PTO, fibre box)
  • SC/UPC: standard digital links, data centres
  • LC/APC: modern high-density networks, SFP switches
7Can I cascade multiple splitters?
Yes, but each splitter adds its own loss. For example, a 1:4 followed by a 1:8 = 1:32 in total, but with ~17.5 dB of cumulative loss. Always check your total optical budget before cascading.
8What is the delivery time?
All PLC splitters are in stock and shipped within 24h (business days). Chronopost next-day delivery for mainland France. Orders placed before 2pm shipped the same day.
