Choose the right pigtail for your connector and fibre

The choice depends on your equipment's connector, the type of fibre installed and the number of terminations required.

1) Which connector?

SC/APC (green)

French FTTH standard. Fibre boxes, ONTs, converters.

LC/UPC (blue)

Switches, SFP modules, patch panels.

LC/APC (green)

Long-distance networks, sensitive links.

FC / ST / E2000

Industrial, instrumentation, existing installations.

2) Single-mode or multimode?

For industrial installations, instrumentation and legacy networks. FC/UPC, FC/APC, ST/UPC, E2000/APC.

SC/UPC — Multimode OM3 & OM4

For data centres and short-distance links. 50/125 µm, optimised for 850 nm laser.

Why choose Elfcam pigtails

Guaranteed splice quality

  • Clean bare fibre: stripped and cleaved in the factory, ready for fusion without additional preparation.
  • Pre-polished connector: insertion loss < 0.3 dB, return loss APC ≥ 60 dB / UPC ≥ 50 dB.
  • Flexible 0.9 mm jacket: coils easily into standard splice cassettes.
  • TIA-598 colour code: immediate identification of each fibre in the bundle (blue, orange, green, brown…).
  • 1.5 m length: sufficient for the required slack in a termination enclosure.

FAQ — Fibre optic pigtails

1SC/APC, LC/UPC, FC… how do I choose the right connector?
  • SC/APC: FTTH standard in France (ONT, fibre box, converters)
  • LC/UPC: switches, SFP modules, modern patch panels
  • LC/APC: sensitive long-distance links, PON networks
  • FC: instrumentation, industrial environments
  • ST: legacy installations
  • E2000: high-density telecom networks
2Do I need a splicer to install a pigtail?
Yes. The pigtail is spliced by fusion (electric arc) onto the bare fibre of the main cable. Splice loss: < 0.05 dB. This is the standard method on all telecom and FTTH sites.
3What's the difference between colour-coded and white/yellow?
TIA-598 colour code: each fibre has a different colour (blue, orange, green, brown…) for immediate identification — ideal for multi-fibre cables. Plain white or yellow: all fibres in the same colour — sufficient for small bundles or when identification is done by position.
412, 24 or 48 fibres: how many to choose?
Match the number of fibres in the cable you are terminating. 12 fibres: standard for most installations. 24 fibres: medium cables, residential buildings. 48 fibres: large sites, backbone, riser. Always pick the same number as your cable (or a multiple).
5Single-mode or multimode for my installation?
Single-mode (OS2, 9/125 µm): for all distances > 300 m, FTTH, campus, inter-building. It is the telecom standard. Multimode (OM3/OM4, 50/125 µm): only for short links in data centres (< 300 m), with multimode equipment at both ends.
6Are the pigtails compatible with all termination enclosures?
Yes. The 0.9 mm jacket is the universal standard. The pigtails fit into all splice cassettes and termination enclosures that comply with international standards. See our ONT wall outlets.
7What is the guaranteed insertion loss?
< 0.3 dB per connector. The connectors are factory pre-polished with a zirconia ceramic ferrule. Return loss is ≥ 60 dB for APC and ≥ 50 dB for UPC — compliant with FTTH operator requirements.
8What is the delivery lead time?
All pigtails are in stock and shipped within 24 hours (business days). Chronopost next-day delivery for mainland France. Orders placed before 2 pm shipped the same day.
