Orange Business Services — Enterprise network expansion under tight deadline

Orange Business Services (OBS) is a provider of information services to businesses, covering consulting, design, implementation, optimisation, monitoring and maintenance, as well as the development of customised IT systems. OBS supports IT teams in needs analysis, defining objectives and ensuring efficient implementation.

As part of its business growth, OBS developed a project for a new office area requiring a complete enterprise network. Commissioning was planned within the month following initial contact with Elfcam — a tight deadline requiring rapid selection and remote testing.

Elfcam, based on the specific requirements provided by OBS, delivered efficient and easy-to-manage solutions through rigorous product selection and remote testing within a limited timeframe.

Three constraints to resolve within a tight deadline

1

Replacement of existing access switches — OBS wanted to standardise its infrastructure by adopting the Elfcam OLT24 range as access switches, while ensuring service continuity during the transition.

2

WiFi infrastructure overhaul — the office expansion required extending coverage and increasing wireless network speed across the entire new area, with PoE power supply for the access points.

3

Delivery and commissioning in less than a month — OBS had to open the new area within a tight deadline. Elfcam had to test the products, validate the solution and ensure delivery without delay.

Two architectures analysed — one solution selected

After a thorough analysis of OBS's needs, the Elfcam network team proposed two alternative architectures for the core network:

Solution 1 — MLAG

High availability via MLAG technology

Two Elfcam OLT24 switches in MLAG forming a single logical switch. Support for VXLAN, NVGRE, DCBX, PFC, EVPN and MPLS for advanced network virtualisation. Suited to future expansion needs and multi-scenario traffic control. Requires more demanding management and operation.

Solution 2 — Selected ✓

Switch stacking — Operational simplicity

Two identical core switches stacked to multiply ports without management complexity. Elfcam POE16 PoE++ 90 W/port, RJ45 10G multi-rate port (1G/2.5G/5G/10G). Wired + wireless combination ensuring total coverage of the area and efficient operation of equipment.

OBS analysed its needs and opted for Solution 2 — OLT24 stacking as core switches: a better balance between performance, operational simplicity and a deployment timeline compatible with the imminent commissioning.

The combination of stacked OLT24 switches + armoured OM3 fibre cables + SFP+ 10G modules enabled Orange Business Services to open its new office area within the planned timeframe. The wired and wireless solution provides complete network coverage, multi-rate access for all equipment, and PoE++ power supply for the WiFi access points.

Elfcam solutions deployed in this project

The OBS infrastructure is based on three complementary Elfcam components: armoured OM3 fibre cables for backbone links, the OLT GPON switch for aggregation, and SFP+ 10G modules for connecting servers and active equipment.
