ELFCAM home fibre optic network — converter, fibre switch, PoE and 10G plug and play

Choose your solution in 30 seconds

Choose your configuration based on your usage

Step 1 What is your situation?
Step 2 Do you need PoE? (IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points, VoIP)

Tip: if you're not sure, choose "No" or "I don't know" — you can always add a PoE injector later.

Step 3 How many wired devices to connect?

Deploy your home fibre network — step-by-step checklist

Use this list as a checklist. Each step matches an answer and the products shown on this page — you can set everything up without looking elsewhere.

1
Assess your network needs
Number of devices (PC, TV, NAS, cameras, Wi-Fi…), area size, and expected bandwidth (regular use, remote work, 4K streaming, 10G).
2
Choose the right architecture
Converter (simple point-to-point) • Fibre switch (expandable network) • PoE (Wi-Fi / cameras) • 10G (highly equipped homes, NAS, Freebox Ultra/Livebox 6).
3
Physically install the cables
Run the fibre and Ethernet while avoiding bends/twists. Choose suitable cables (indoor/outdoor) and secure sensitive routes (corners, conduits, walls).
4
Connect and configure equipment
Fibre → converter/switch • Ethernet → box/router/devices • PoE → Wi-Fi/cameras. ELFCAM solutions are plug-and-play, with no complex setup.
5
Test and validate the network
Check connectivity for each device, test speed/stability, and confirm PoE power if used. If in doubt, check the relevant product page.
Tip: if you're unsure, start with the guide "Choose the right switch for your usage". In 30 seconds, you'll know whether you need a converter, a fibre switch, a PoE or a 10G. Open the guide →

Solution 1 — Fibre Optic Converter (without SFP)

The fibre optic converter transforms light signals into electrical signals (and vice versa). In practice, 2 converters are enough to create a simple fibre link, plug-and-play, with no SFP modules to buy (SFP already built-in).

Capacity
  • Max Ethernet outputs: 4
  • Max fibre outputs: 1
  • SFP: built-in (1.25Gb)
  • Cascade: No
When to choose?
  • 1 fibre link + 1 zone to feed
  • 1 to 4 devices on the "arrival" side
  • You want the simplest network

Example: Ethernet (ref 11665) → converter (e.g. ref 2321) → fibre (ref 319) → converter.

Solution 2 — Fibre Optic Switch (cascade & expandable)

The fibre optic switch connects several devices to an optical network and distributes data to the right point. It is the ideal solution if you want a scalable network, with cascade and multiple zones.

Capacity
  • Max Ethernet outputs: 8
  • Max fibre outputs: 8
  • SFP: 1.25Gb
  • Cascade: Yes
PoE: required?
  • Yes: IP cameras / Wi-Fi APs / VoIP
  • No: TV / PC / console / NAS (often)
  • If unsure → go without PoE and add an injector later

Module SFP 1.25G, Monomode SC 39,99 € TTC

How to choose the number of ports?

2 ports

For 1–2 devices in one zone (TV + box, PC, etc.).

8 ports

The home "sweet spot": TV, console, PC, NAS, Wi-Fi AP.

16 ports

Well-equipped home: cameras, multiple APs, NAS, smart home.

Solution 3 — Fibre Switch + Integrated SFP Converter

A "home + pro" architecture: a central switch distributes the network over Ethernet, and fibre links use SFP/SFP+ depending on the model. Ideal if you want a more solid and more scalable base than a pair of converters.

10Gb Fibre Network — Ultra high-performance home

The 10Gb network (10 gigabits per second) is currently the highest level of performance available for a home. It relies on SFP+ ports and remains backwards compatible with SFP (1.25G) equipment.

By equipping your setup with a fibre switch with SFP+ ports, you very easily create a mixed 10G / 2.5G / 1G network, ready for current uses and future evolutions.

  • Max Ethernet outputs: 5
  • Max fibre outputs: 2
  • SFP / SFP+: 10G / 1.25G
  • Cascade: Yes
  • 4K / 8K streaming with no lag
  • High-speed NAS & fast backups
  • Online gaming & cloud gaming
  • Intensive multi-user network

The essentials for a home (minimum list)

Whatever your choice (converter or switch), these items form the basis of the network.

Converters / Switch

Depending on your scenario (see selection). For a simple link: converter. For an extension: switch.

Ethernet Cables

To connect box, TV, PC, NAS. Choose based on constraints (flat/round, CAT7/CAT8).

Fibre Optic Cables (SC)

The fibre link between devices (depending on indoor/outdoor and protection level).

FAQ — Home Fiber

1Converter or switch: how do I make sure of my choice?
If you connect one zone to one zone with 1–4 devices on the receiving side → converter. If you want multiple zones, future expansion, or several fibre links → switch.
2Do I need PoE at home?
PoE is useful if you directly power IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points, or VoIP phones. For TV / PC / console / NAS, PoE brings no benefit.
3How many ports do I need (2/8/16)?
2 ports: 1–2 devices. 8 ports: most homes (TV, console, PC, NAS, AP). 16 ports: well-equipped home (cameras, multiple APs, smart home, NAS).
41G, 2.5G or 10G: when is it worth it?
1G is enough for standard internet. 2.5G/10G becomes relevant with NAS, heavy transfers, Wi-Fi 7, multi-user, or boxes such as Freebox Ultra / Livebox 6.
5Do I need SFP modules?
With the "without SFP" converter solution, the modules are built-in. With switch solutions (SFP/SFP+), some models require modules depending on the architecture. That's exactly the point of the "selection in 30 seconds" module.
6Which fibre cable to choose: indoor, outdoor, armoured steel?
Indoor: standard cable. Outdoor: suitable jacket. Armoured steel: maximum protection for harsh conduits / risk areas.
7Are these solutions compatible with my box (Freebox, Livebox, SFR Box)?
Yes. All Elfcam converters and switches are compatible with all fibre boxes on the market: Freebox Ultra/Delta/Pop, Orange Livebox 6/7, SFR Box 8, Bouygues Bbox. Connection is made via the box's Ethernet or SFP port.
