Divide an optical signal into multiple outputs without any power supply. PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) technology for uniform, reliable distribution.

Fibre optic pigtails — termination by fusion splicing

Short cables pre-connectorised on one side, bare fibre on the other. They are fusion-spliced onto the main cable to add an SC, LC or FC connector.

When to use a pigtail on site?

New installation

Fibre cable laid without a connector → splice a pigtail to add an SC/APC or LC/UPC at each end.

Repair / extension

Required tool: fibre optic fusion splicer. Splice loss < 0.05 dB — a permanent, reliable connection.

FAQ — Fibre optic accessories

1What's the difference between APC (green) and UPC (blue)?
APC (Angled Physical Contact): face polished at 8°, return loss ≥ 60 dB. Standard for FTTH and sensitive analogue signals. UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): flat face, return loss ≥ 50 dB. Sufficient for standard digital links. Absolute rule: never mate an APC with a UPC — risk of damaging both ferrules.
2Simplex or duplex coupler: how to choose?
Simplex: single fibre (BiDi, PON, point-to-point FTTH links). Duplex: two fibres (separate Tx + Rx, Ethernet standard). Most switches and SFP modules use LC duplex.
3Which PLC splitter ratio should I choose for my project?
Calculate your optical budget (transmitted power – receiver sensitivity – cable losses) and check that the splitter loss fits within it:
  • 1:2 (~3.5 dB): testing, dual feed.
  • 1:4 (~7 dB): small building, SME.
  • 1:8 (~10.5 dB): medium building, campus.
  • 1:16 (~13.5 dB): dense FTTH — make sure your OLT has enough margin.
4Do I need a fusion splicer to install a pigtail?
Yes. A pigtail is fusion-spliced (electric arc) onto the bare fibre of the main cable. Splice loss < 0.05 dB — the standard method on every telecom project.
5How many fibres can a termination box hold?

6Are Elfcam couplers compatible with all patch panels?
Yes. Standard SC simplex, LC duplex, FC and ST cut-outs — compatible with all panels, boxes and trays meeting international standards (IEC 61754, TIA-604).
7SC, LC, FC, ST — which one to use?
  • SC: the most common in FTTH and media converters (push-pull, robust).
  • LC: standard in switches, SFPs and modern network equipment (compact, high density).
  • FC: instrumentation, industrial environments, critical links (screw-on).
  • ST: older standard, still found in some existing installations (bayonet).
